Back to School Ham and Swiss Croissant Sandwiches

  • Author: Lucia

  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

A quick, 10-minute weeknight dinner featuring buttery, pan-fried croissants filled with ham, Swiss cheese, and mustard. Perfect for busy families and kid-approved.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large butter croissants (fresh or frozen)
  • 68 slices sliced ham (honey, black forest, or spiral-sliced)
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese (Emmental or good quality Swiss)
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter (for brushing)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard (optional)
  • 1 cup arugula or lettuce (optional)
  • Tomato slices (optional, thinly sliced Roma)

Instructions

  1. Slice croissants horizontally, scoring them so they open like a book without cutting all the way through. If frozen, let thaw for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Spread Dijon mustard on the inside of the bottom half of each croissant.
  3. Layer ham and Swiss cheese onto the bottom half. Add arugula or tomatoes if using. Top with the top half and press down gently.
  4. Brush the top and bottom of each croissant generously with softened butter.
  5. Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sandwiches one or two at a time, ensuring the pan is not crowded.
  6. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Flip sandwiches carefully. Cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side.
  8. If cheese isn’t melting, add a teaspoon of water to the pan and cover with a lid for 30 seconds to steam.
  9. Remove from pan and let rest for 1 minute before cutting diagonally and serving immediately.

Notes

Use medium-low heat to prevent burning the bread before the cheese melts. Do not skip buttering the outside for a crispy texture. If using frozen croissants, ensure they are thawed enough to spread butter evenly. For leftovers, store in an airtight container for up to 2 days and reheat in a skillet or toaster oven to maintain crispiness.
